Scaffold Safety
Criteria of Supported Scaffold
- Supported scaffold systems can become unsafe if not secured at elevated heights. All systems with a 4:1 base to height ratio need to be secured to prevent tipping.
- Some methods include guys, ties, and braces installed at locations where horizontal members support both inner and outer legs. A competent person should be responsible for evaluating the method used.
- Supported scaffold poles, legs, posts, frames, and uprights shall bear on base plates and mud sills or other adequate firm foundation.
- A common misconception is that only one of these elements is needed. This is incorrect. To ensure proper footing all scaffold systems should be properly assembled from the ground up.
- If material is not available to accomplish this requirement, the scaffold system should not be assembled until proper equipment is available.
